Homeschool and institutional school

Many families nowadays homeschool for so many reasons. I am a teacher and founder, along with my husband, of a bilingual school in Honduras. So I guess it is only fair to answer this question that friends have asked me before.

Daniel and I believe the responsibility of shaping the character of our children while they are young, is ours and ours only. Schools are great in so many ways, but they are not responsible for shaping our children’s world view. That is our highest assignment.

There are more opportunities to go deeper, slow down and go faster, based on their skills and likes. While school should give this opportunity, in big classrooms it is hard to personalize the education.

The process of maturity develops more naturally when the age group is combined. The concept of community develops when all age groups are involved. Adults are not the enemy and babies are not annoying.

The preparation for real life is very real. The assignments and house duties gradually become more independent activities that so far have become a nice way to share life and grow in responsibility without complaining. That is not always the case, but it is for most part.

The opportunity to train the young brain, to develop a love for learning and work because this is life. In reality we keep learning, we spend most of our adult life at work. It should not be considered a punishment or a mere searching for awards.

There could be other reasons out there, but this is the core of the why in our family. We don’t think schools are the enemy, or that we are better in anyway. This is just the option we took when we had to decide and go along wherever the Lord takes us.

Tell me what is your story, or if you have questions.
